Data Storage

Account Information

  • When you register with Yahoo! or submit information to Yahoo!, a temporary copy of that information is routinely made to prevent accidental loss of your information through a computer malfunction or human error.
  • Yahoo! keeps your account information active in our user registration databases in order to provide immediate access to your personalization preferences each time you visit Yahoo!.
  • If you ask Yahoo! to delete your Yahoo! account, in most cases your account will be deactivated and then deleted from our user registration database in approximately 90 days. This delay is necessary to discourage users from engaging in fraudulent activity.
  • Please note that any information that we have copied may remain in back-up storage for some period of time after your deletion request. This may be the case even though no information about your account remains in our active user databases.
Servers
  • The Yahoo! computers (called "servers") that send your web pages and advertising banners process and store an enormous amount of information every day. These computer records are called "log files."
  • Log files are used for analysis, research, auditing, and other purposes, as described above. After this information has been used, it is stored and is inaccessible. Until the information is stored, your Yahoo! ID may remain in our active server log files.

Family Accounts

Yahoo! Family Accounts allows a parent or legal guardian to give consent before their child creates an account with Yahoo!. A child is someone who indicates to us that they are under the age of 13.

Information Collection and Use Practices

  • Before a parent can give consent for their child to register with Yahoo! through a Yahoo! Family Account, the parent must register and create their own Yahoo! account.
  • In addition to information requested at registration, Yahoo! Family Accounts asks for the parent's name and credit card information. The credit card will not be charged; it is used for real-time verification purposes only.
  • The credit card information is archived in a secure fashion as evidence that parental consent was received.

Flickr
Flickr is a photo sharing community which provides you with an easy way to post and share photos online, and add meaningful metadata and comments to photos. You do not need to be registered to search or view public photos on Flickr, however you must be a registered member of Flickr or Yahoo! to post.

The Flickr Privacy Policy continues to be in effect for existing users of the Flickr service who have not yet merged their Flickr and Yahoo! accounts. For members who have merged their accounts or who signed up using a Yahoo! ID, this page describes current Yahoo! practices with respect to the Flickr products and services.

Information Collection and Use Practices

  • You can choose to make your photos public for anyone to access, restrict access to a limited number of other Flickr users, or keep those photos private so only you can access them.
  • Advertisements shown to you may be related to textual information, such as metadata and notes, associated with the photo you are seeing, or the search term you entered.
Information Sharing and Disclosure Practices
  • You can specify whether or not you want your photos to be accessible to the public, accessible to a select few, or private (only you can access them with your Yahoo! ID and password).
  • Billing for Flickr premium services, such as Flickr Pro, is done using PayPal, a third party.
    • You do not need a PayPal account to pay when using your credit card. With either purchase method, your transaction and the personal information collected is subject to PayPal's terms and privacy policy. Yahoo! doesn't share your personal information with Paypal and Paypal doesn't share personal information they collect with Yahoo!.
    • PayPal may continue to list the seller as Ludicorp Research and Development Ltd. which is now part of Yahoo!. Ludicorp had owned Flickr before.
Practices Regarding Your Ability to Update or Delete Information
  • You can delete individual photos that you have on Flickr by selecting the photos that you wish to delete, then clicking the delete button. Or you can delete groups of photos using batch operations.
  • Visit your Flickr account information area to edit your profile, default privacy settings for photos, and more.
  • Communication with you
    • Flickr communication is currently managed separately from your Yahoo! Marketing Preferences and Subscriptions.
    • Visit your Flickr account information area to edit your email notification settings.
    • Flickr Pro accounts cannot be canceled. If you created a Paypal account and would like to update/delete your information, you will need to visit their site. Paypal doesn't share that information with Yahoo!.

IP Addresses

When your web browser or email application requests a web page or email from another computer on the Internet, it automatically gives that computer the address where it should send the information. This is called your computer's "IP address." (IP stands for "Internet protocol.") For most users accessing the Internet from a dial-up Internet service provider (ISP), the IP address will be different every time you log on.

Information Collection and Use Practices

  • Yahoo! receives IP addresses from all users because this information is automatically reported by your browser each time you view a web page.
  • Your IP address is also stored in our user registration databases when you register with Yahoo!.
  • IP addresses may be used for various purposes, including to:
    • Diagnose service or technology problems reported by our users or engineers that are associated with the IP addresses controlled by a specific web company or ISP.
    • Send the most appropriate advertising based on geographic area or information derived from your IP address. Many IP addresses are commonly associated with Internet service providers, universities, or major corporations in specific regions or localities. Aggregate information derived from IP addresses may also be reported to advertisers.
    • Estimate the total number of users visiting Yahoo! from specific countries or regions of the world.
    • Assist merchants in Yahoo! Stores and Yahoo! Shopping to track visits to and business at their stores.
    • Help determine which users have access privileges to certain content that we host.
Other
  • When a Yahoo! web page is requested and viewed, that request is logged on our servers with information including the IP address of the computer that requested the page.
  • Yahoo! Mail includes IP addresses in outgoing mail message headers, as specified by standard Internet protocol.
  • Yahoo! Messenger sometimes uses a peer-to-peer connection during its operation, including times when you may be using it for instant messaging (text conversations), file sharing and webcam streaming. Peer-to-peer means that your computer connects directly to the other user's computer in the conversation without needing to go through Yahoo! servers. As such, your IP address is available to users you share a peer-to-peer connection with.

Mobile Devices

Yahoo! provides services which allow users to access and customize Internet content through mobile phones, PDAs, and other alternative devices. These devices may collect different information than what is collected by computers.

Mobile Device Unique Identifier

  • When connecting to Yahoo! using a mobile device that provides Internet access, if the mobile device service provider uniquely identifies the device, Yahoo! will receive this information.
  • Yahoo! may use this unique mobile device identification information to offer extended services and/or functionality.
  • Certain Yahoo! services may require our collection of the phone number for your device. We may associate that phone number to the mobile device identification information; however we will not use that number for telemarketing.
Physical Location
  • Some mobile phone service providers in the US are required to operate a system that will pinpoint the physical location of devices that use their service.
  • Depending on the provider, Yahoo! may automatically receive this information.
    • In the future, if Yahoo! begins to offer services that use pinpointing technology, we will ensure that we have your consent (an opt-in) before using the information.
    • Yahoo! may use and store this information to provide enhanced location-based services as well as to serve location-targeted advertising.
    • Yahoo! does not rent, sell or share personal information about you with other people or nonaffiliated companies except to provide products or services you've requested, when we have your permission, or under the following circumstances:
      • We provide the information to trusted partners who work on behalf of or with Yahoo! under confidentiality agreements. These companies may use your personal information to help Yahoo! communicate with you about offers from Yahoo! and our marketing partners. However, these companies do not have any independent right to share this information.
      • We have a parent's permission to share the information if the user is a child under the age of 13. Parents have the option of allowing Yahoo!'s collection and use of their child's information without consenting to Yahoo!'s sharing of this information with people and companies who may use this information for their own purposes;
      • We respond to subpoenas, court orders or legal process, or to establish or exercise our legal rights or defend against legal claims;
      • We believe it is necessary to share information in order to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activities, suspected fraud, emergency situations involving potential threats to the physical safety of any person, violations of Yahoo!'s terms of use, or as otherwise required by law.
      • We transfer information about you if Yahoo! is acquired by or merged with another company. In this event, Yahoo! will notify you before information about you is transferred and subject to a different privacy policy.
Your Ability to Edit and Delete Your Account Information and Preferences
  • While using mobile devices for connecting to Yahoo!, limitations of the service may prevent you from utilizing full functionality of Yahoo! services or tools. This includes the ability to edit or delete account information and content. You may need to use a computer to connect with Yahoo! in those cases.
  • You can cancel all Yahoo! Alerts sent to your mobile device by visiting http://mobile.yahoo.com/sms/canceldevice1. Because many phone companies recycle phone numbers, it is possible for users who purchase a new phone to receive alerts that the previous owner had subscribed to. Since your phone has an email address that anyone can send a message to, Yahoo! can only stop alerts that it manages. Only your carrier can prevent all messages from being delivered to your device.

Research

From time to time, Yahoo! may invite users to participate in usability studies, surveys, and other types of qualitative and quantitative research to help us better design our site, plan new features to add to our products and services, and help us understand our users' wants and needs. Yahoo! also conducts research using data from our internal records.

Research Panels

  • Yahoo! recruits research subjects through a variety of means, including advertising banners, email messages, and through market research firms.
  • Participants in research are often required to sign separate privacy or confidentiality agreements and may be compensated for their time.
Internal Information
  • Information about audiences and traffic from Yahoo!'s own log files and user databases may also be used for research purposes in an ongoing effort to improve our products and services.
Information Sharing and Disclosure Practices
  • Statistics from research may be shared with our partners, prospective partners, or advertisers when these data are aggregated (not individually identifiable) or averaged across many users.

Security at Yahoo!
General
Yahoo! takes your security seriously and takes reasonable steps to protect your information. No data transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. The following is a summary of the measures Yahoo! takes to protect your information and descriptions of ways we implement these measures for different types of information you may provide to us. Please see our Security Center for additional information on how to reduce your security risk when online.

Yahoo! continues to evaluate and implement enhancements in security technology and practices, however we can only take steps to help reduce the risks of unauthorized access. Each individual using the Internet can take steps to help protect their information and further minimize the likelihood that a security incident may occur. We describe some of those measures and provide links to information that may be helpful in these pages and within our Security Center.

Security Steps We Have Taken

  • Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
Yahoo! uses SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption when transmitting certain kinds of information, such as financial services information or payment information. An icon resembling a padlock is displayed on the bottom of most browsers window during SSL transactions that involve credit cards and other forms of payment. Any time Yahoo! asks you for a credit card number on Yahoo! for payment or for verification purposes, it will be SSL encrypted. The information you provide will be stored securely on our servers. Once you choose to store or enter your credit card number on Yahoo!, it will not be displayed back to you in its entirety when you retrieve or edit it in the future. Instead of the entire number, you will only see asterisks and either the first four digits or the last four digits of your number.
  • Security Key
The Yahoo! Security Key is an additional optional layer of security to control access to sensitive information or services on Yahoo!. Users of financial services such as Yahoo! Wallet, PayDirect, Yahoo! Bill Pay, and Money Manager are asked to create a security key during the sign-up process or when you purchase certain services that require a Yahoo! Wallet. Please note that the Security Key automatically "times out" after an hour and requires the user to sign in again to access Security Key protected areas.
  • Secure Storage
Yahoo! maintains reasonable physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards that comply with federal regulations to protect personal information about you.
  • Vendors and Partners
Yahoo! works with vendors and partners to protect the security and privacy of user information.
  • Employee and Contractor Access to Information
Yahoo! limits access to personal information about you to those employees who we reasonably believe need to come into contact with that information to provide products or services to you or in order to do their jobs.
  • Education and Training for Employees
Yahoo! has implemented a company-wide education and training program about security that is required of every Yahoo! employee.

Security Steps You Can Take
The following is information about topics that you may want to learn more about and steps you can take to help maintain your account and computer security when online.

Reporting incidents

  • To Yahoo!
  • To Law Enforcement
In the event that you believe that your personal safety is at risk or if you believe that you may be the victim of identity theft or other illegal conduct, please contact the appropriate federal, state or local law enforcement agencies directly.

Third Party and Affiliate Cookies on Yahoo!

Certain ad networks and Yahoo! affiliates use cookies on the Yahoo! network of web sites as described below.

Ad Networks
Most advertisements you see on the Yahoo! network of web sites are served to your web browser by Yahoo!. However, we also allow other companies, called ad networks, to serve advertisements within our web pages. Ad networks include third party ad servers, ad agencies, ad technology vendors and research firms.

Yahoo! may also include a file, called a web beacon, from these ad networks within pages served by Yahoo! so the networks may provide auditing, research and reporting for advertisers.

Because your web browser must request these advertisements and web beacons from the ad network's servers, these companies can view, edit or set their own cookies, just as if you had requested a web page from their site.

Yahoo "targets" some ads to users that may fit a certain profile – for example, men interested in financial services. Yahoo! does not provide any personal information to the advertiser when you interact with or view a targeted ad. However, when you view or interact with an ad the possibility exists that the advertiser will make the assumption that you meet the targeting criteria used to display the ad.

Yahoo! Affiliates
Yahoo! may allow certain Yahoo! affiliates to include web beacons within pages served by Yahoo!. These affiliates aggregate information about our advertising and provide auditing, research and reporting for our advertisers. Currently, Yahoo! allows web beacons from the following affiliate (click to visit their website):

None of the personal identifying information you have provided to Yahoo! is shared with our advertisers or our affiliates as part of this program.

Opting Out of Third Party Cookies
If you would like an ad network to not set or use cookies on your computer, you must visit each ad network's web site individually and opt out (if they offer this capability).

Currently, Yahoo! has relationships with the following ad networks (click to visit their site):

Upcoming.org

Upcoming.org is a collaborative events calendar. You can enter events you plan to attend, comment on events entered by others, and syndicate event listings to your own blog. You can also receive reminders of events via email and SMS. Upcoming.org is not intended for an audience under 13 years of age.

Information Collection and Use Practices

  • The Upcoming.org registration process is currently separate from the Yahoo! registration process.
    • For an Upcoming.org account, only your email address is required. Optionally, you can provide your name, zip code, home page URL, and photo URL.
    • You will need to verify your email address during the Upcoming.org registration process and before you may use your account.
  • To receive SMS reminders, you will need to provide your cell phone number; we'll only use this to send you reminders. If you choose to set up reminders on your profile editing page, your cell number will not be included in your public profile.
  • Advertisements shown to you may be related to the events you have created, are attending/watching, or the search terms you have entered.
Information Sharing and Disclosure Practices
  • If you choose to provide them, your name, home page URL, and photo URL will be included in your public profile.
  • Events you create will be publicly displayed unless you mark it 'personal/private.'
    • Events marked 'personal/private' will be displayed to users you have identified as friends.
    • If you choose to share a personal event with a group, that whole group will then have access to that event. If you share with a public group your event will, in effect, become a public event.
  • At this time, events can be edited but not deleted.
  • Links to your profile are included with all comments you make and all events you create, watch, or commit to attend.
  • Currently, you're not able to edit or delete comments you make.

    • You can choose to stop receiving reminders via email and SMS at any time by editing your profile.
  • You may delete your Upcoming.org account.
Other
  • When you use Upcoming.org, you are subject to the Yahoo! Terms of Service and to the Yahoo! Community Guidelines.
  • Please see Upcoming.org Help if you have questions about this service.

This page describes current Yahoo! practices with respect to this particular service. This information may change as Yahoo! revises this service by adding or removing features or using different service providers. To find out how Yahoo! treats your personal information, please visit our Privacy Policy.

Web Beacons

Web pages may contain an electronic file called a web beacon, that allows a web site to count users who have visited that page or to access certain cookies. Yahoo! uses web beacons in the following ways:

Within the Yahoo! Network

  • Yahoo! uses web beacons within the Yahoo! network of web sites in order to count users and to recognize users by accessing Yahoo! cookies.
  • Being able to access Yahoo! cookies allows us to personalize your experience when you visit Yahoo! web sites that are located both on and off of the yahoo.com domain. For example, Yahoo! GeoCities pages are mostly located on the geocities.com domain.

Outside the Yahoo! Network

  • Yahoo! uses web beacons to conduct research on behalf of certain partners on their web sites and also for auditing purposes.
  • Information recorded through these web beacons is used to report anonymous individual and/or aggregate information about Yahoo! users to our partners. Aggregate information may include demographic and usage information. No personally identifiable information about you is shared with partners from this research.
  • When conducting research Yahoo!'s practice is to require our partners to disclose the presence of these web beacons on their pages in their privacy policies and state what choices are available to users regarding the collection and use of this information. You may choose to opt-out of Yahoo! using this information for this research. Please click here to opt-out.

Note: This opt-out applies to a specific browser rather than a specific user. Therefore you will have to opt-out separately from each computer or browser that you use.

HTML Mail

  • Yahoo!'s practice is to include web beacons in HTML-formatted email messages (messages that include graphics) that Yahoo!, or its agents, sends in order to determine which email messages were opened and to note whether a message was acted upon.

In general, any file served as part of a web page, including an ad banner, can act as a web beacon. Yahoo! may also include web beacons from other companies within pages served by Yahoo! so that Yahoo!'s advertisers may receive auditing, research and reporting.

Yahoo! Alerts

Yahoo! Alerts provides delivery of information on Yahoo! to your email box, Yahoo! Messenger, or mobile device. In order to use Yahoo! Alerts, you must be a registered Yahoo! user.

Information Collection and Use Practices

  • Creating a Yahoo! Alert requires you to select an email address or mobile device where your alert will be delivered. Additional personal information may be required, depending on the type of alert you create.

Practices Regarding Your Ability to Update or Delete Information

  • You can edit or delete your alerts at any time.
  • You can cancel all Yahoo! Alerts sent to your mobile device by visiting http://mobile.yahoo.com/cancelalerts.

Web Beacons

  • Yahoo! Alerts uses an invisible pixel, sometimes called a "web beacon," in HTML email messages to determine which email messages were opened and to note whether a message was acted upon.

Yahoo! Auctions

Yahoo! Auctions is an online auction service that provides a marketplace for buyers and sellers to find one another and conduct business. In order to bid on or sell merchandise using Yahoo! Auctions, you must be a registered Yahoo! user.

Information Collection and Use Practices

  • The first time you place an item up for bid as a seller, or when you engage in multiple auctions as a bidder, Yahoo! will ask you to verify your Yahoo! account with a credit card. In addition to your credit card information, Yahoo! asks for your name, email address, and zip code. You will not be charged a fee for this verification.
  • All sellers are required to verify their credit card by signing up for a Yahoo! Wallet or for Yahoo! PayDirect. Yahoo! uses this information to help prevent misuse of Yahoo! Auctions.
  • The credit card stored in your Yahoo! Wallet is used to bill you on a monthly basis for any applicable listing fees, and we reserve the right to bill your credit card when your account total reaches $100.
  • When you bid on an item on Yahoo! Auctions, you must enter the amount of your bid and your password. This bid will be publicly available in the auction bid history along with your Yahoo! ID or alias that you are bidding under.
  • In the Question & Answer section of each auction, bidders can submit questions for the seller. These questions, the answers, and your Yahoo! ID or alias will be visible to the public.
  • When an auction has successfully closed, buyers and sellers are invited to rate one another. All ratings for a buyer or seller are publicly displayed under the "Ratings" tab of a user's Auction Profile. Both parties (the party that was rated as well as the party that did the rating) are identified with their Yahoo! IDs and with a link to the auction that they transacted within the rating itself.
  • If you file a claim, we ask you to fill out a complaint form that asks for information including your name, address, and email address. We use this information to send you and the seller involved in the claim an email encouraging each party to resolve the dispute. The email will contain a link to the complaint that you file. We populate the seller's Yahoo! ID and email address into the complaint form and the seller is responsible for forwarding this information to cynoSure Financial Inc. We also store this information for you so that you may access your claim and send it to cynoSure Financial Inc. in the event that you escalate your claim.
  • The Neighborhood Watch feature allows users to voice opinions about auctions that do not belong on our auction site. We use this information to decide which auctions should be removed. When you submit a Neighborhood Watch report, we ask for your Yahoo! ID. This information is not visible to the public.
  • When you create an Auctions Alert, Yahoo! asks you to define what you wish to be alerted about (bids, new auctions in certain categories, etc.) and asks for an email address where your alert should be sent. You can modify or delete alerts at any time from the alerts section of Yahoo! Auctions or from Yahoo! Alerts.
  • When you use the "Email to a Friend" link, Yahoo! will prefill a form with the name and email address we have for you in our records. You enter the email address for the person you want to receive the notice. Yahoo! will use that email address to transmit your message and not for any marketing purpose.
  • When you submit a testimonial about your experience on Yahoo! Auctions, we will ask for your name, email address, Yahoo! ID, and information about your experience. If you indicate that we may quote you, your name and experience may be shared with others, and you may be contacted about your experience.
Information Sharing and Disclosure Practices
  • When an auction has been completed, Yahoo! will transmit the contact information of the winning bidder to the seller and vice versa so that the parties can complete the transaction.
  • If you are involved in a claim, Yahoo! may share certain personal information and transactional information with cynoSure Financial Inc. in order to help facilitate the investigation and resolution of the claim. cynoSure Financial Inc. may only use this information to process claims and may not use this information for any other purpose.

Each web site can send its own cookie to your browser if your browser's preferences allow it, but (to protect your privacy) your browser only permits a web site to access the cookies it has already sent to you, not the cookies sent to you by other sites.

  • Those companies provide auditing, research and reporting for advertisers.
  • Advertisers' and researchers' use of cookies is subject to their own privacy policies, not the Yahoo! Privacy Policy.

Yahoo! Developer Network

Yahoo! Developer Network is a site where developers can access Yahoo! Web Services (also known as the Yahoo! Web APIs). Yahoo! Web Services enable application developers and researchers to integrate Yahoo!'s internet content and services with their content and applications. You need to have an Application ID in order to use the Yahoo! Web Services.

Information Collection and Use Practices

  • Before accessing the Yahoo! Web Services, you will need to get an Application ID. Information collected on the Application ID page may be used by Yahoo! to contact you if there is a problem with your application. You will be asked to provide a Yahoo! ID and an optional alternate email address for contacting you.
  • Access to the Web Services is rate-limited based upon the user's IP address. Yahoo! logs IP addresses for each Web Service during a 24-hour period on a per-IP basis in order to determine the number of API calls made by an IP address during a specific window of time.
  • If you wish, you may download a free Software Developer's Kit containing libraries and examples in various languages to help you get started on your applications. Yahoo! logs the number of downloads made from the site.
Information Sharing and Disclosure Practices
  • Whenever you use a Yahoo! Web Service, you are required to provide your Application ID as a parameter to the Web Service request. The Application ID is used to identify each application.
  • In the future, information about your application's popularity may be made available to you through the Yahoo! ID associated with the Application ID.

Yahoo! Messenger with Voice

Yahoo! Messenger with Voice allows you to exchange instant messages and PC-to-PC voice calls with your online friends. If you subscribe to the Phone In or Phone Out premium services, you can also use Messenger to make or receive calls from regular telephones.

You must be a registered Yahoo! user in order to use Yahoo! Messenger. Yahoo! Messenger establishes a connection to the Internet when it is active -- much like a browser does -- in order for communications to be received and transmitted.

Information Collection and Use Practices

  • Yahoo! Messenger automatically checks for updates to Yahoo! software.
  • You can establish a friend list within Messenger and be added as a friend to other members' lists.
  • By default, your online status will be visible to other Messenger members who have you on their friends list and on web pages with an online presence indicator.
    • You can choose to appear offline by signing in as invisible.
    • You can selectively appear online or offline to specific friends or groups of friends on Messenger using the Stealth Settings option
    • You can choose to always appear offline on web pages by editing your preferences in Messenger or Yahoo! Profiles
      • In Messenger, choose Messenger > Preferences > Privacy and uncheck the box to allow Yahoo! web sites to show when you are online.
      • In Yahoo! Profiles settings, check the box to hide your online status from other users.
  • You have certain choices about whether to add friends, be added as a friend, or ignore other members. Adding someone to your ignore list will also ignore PC-to-PC calls and related voice messages from that person.
  • Yahoo! does not save your instant messages, but we do make some functionality, such as archiving and the ability to print and save messages, available to members so that they may retain records of their instant messaging communications.
    • By default, Yahoo! Messenger will archive your message history for the current session, until you sign out. When that that session ends, the message archive will be deleted.
    • To change your archiving preferences in Messenger, choose Messenger > Preferences > Archive
    • Please be aware that even if you choose not to save your message history, members you correspond with may opt to use the functionality available in their version of Messenger to save the communications.
  • Messenger automatically identifies phone numbers and email addresses included in messages so you can quickly save them to your Yahoo! Address Book or take other actions, such as sending an email. This is a function carried out by the Messenger client on your computer and is not done by Yahoo! servers.
  • The text tagging by the automatic highlighting option in LiveWords takes place entirely on your own computer. Yahoo! does not read the text of your messages in order to make LiveWords suggestions. A list of possible suggestions is routinely downloaded to your machine based on the categories and interest levels you have specified. During your IM conversations, the Yahoo! Messenger application on your machine compares the text of messages you send and receive against the list of possible suggestions.
  • Messenger gives you the opportunity to report instant messages you receive as spam. If you choose to report spam, Yahoo! will be sent information about the conversation including the Yahoo! ID of the member being reported, text of the conversation, and your Yahoo! ID.
  • When you invite someone to use Messenger using our form (as opposed to add someone as a friend to your friend list), you will need to provide that person's email address and a message (optional). Information collected on that form will only be used to send an email on your behalf and will not be used for any marketing purposes.
  • Voice
    • By default any other member using Messenger may send you PC-to-PC calls. You can change your preferences so that you only receive calls from members on your friends list.
    • Yahoo! does not save PC-to-PC calls and other voice communications that go through our servers however the voice mails you record for other members are stored on our servers. Yahoo!'s practice is to not use the content of those voice mail messages.
    • If you are using the premium Phone In product in conjunction with Yahoo! Messenger, people using a normal phone will be able to call you in Yahoo! Messenger using your Phone In phone number.
    • If you choose to use the feature Open Talk, people in your friends list will be able to establish a PC-to-PC call with you, without you needing to accept the call.
    • The Contact Search bar feature stores your recent communication history for any communication initiated through the Contact Search Bar where there were no direct matches with your Address Book contacts.
    • Messenger stores a call history on your computer, which you can view in Messenger by choosing Contacts > Voice Messages & Call History. If you use the premium Phone In or Phone Out services, we will also store a call log on your personal Yahoo! Voice Services page.
Information Sharing and Disclosure Practices
  • By using Messenger, you may choose to make some of your personal information public or you may choose to share some of your personal information with others.
  • If you post personal information online that is accessible to the public, you may receive unsolicited messages from other parties in return.
  • Messenger sometimes uses a peer-to-peer connection during its operation, including times when you may be using it for instant messaging (text conversations), file sharing, PC-to-PC calling and webcam streaming. Peer-to-peer means that your computer connects directly to the other user's computer in the conversation without needing to go through Yahoo! servers. As such, your IP address is available to users you share a peer-to-peer connection with.
  • Voice
    • If you are using our premium Phone Out Voice service to make calls from Yahoo! Messenger to normal telephones, your caller ID (telephone number and your name) may be shared with the receiving end. To mask your number in caller ID, in Messenger choose Preferences > Yahoo! Voice.

    • You may purchase individual songs or subscribe to Yahoo! Music Unlimited, our on-demand music service. When you do, you will be asked to create a Yahoo! Security Key and establish a Yahoo! Wallet to process payments.
    • The Music Engine uses MusicNet as a third party provider of Digital Rights Management (DRM) protected content for Yahoo! Music Unlimited. The Music Engine contacts MusicNet servers to retrieve the music licenses for Yahoo! Music Unlimited. MusicNet uses a unique identifier number to authenticate your Yahoo! Music Unlimited session, and to distinguish between different computers and different people using the Yahoo! Music Engine. For licensing reasons, MusicNet will send anonymous reports to the owners of the music or their agencies purposes of paying them. Yahoo! does not share your personally identifiable information with MusicNet.

Information Sharing and Disclosure Practices

  • Music Profile
    • A music profile identified by your Yahoo! ID will be created for you if you rate music or create a customized LAUNCHcast radio station.
    • By default, your music profile is public. It includes a description of your musical tastes, your ratings, followers and influencers, and lists of similar members. It will also link to your LAUNCHcast radio station.
    • When you rate an artist, song, album, or genre, it will be added to your music profile.
  • Community and Social Networking Features
    • Yahoo! identifies users whose musical tastes are similar to each other and provides each user with a list of "similar members". Each person is listed by their Yahoo! ID and a link is provided to their music profile.
    • Many artist, song, and album pages contain a "fans of" section that includes a list of select "fans" of that artist, song or album. You become a "fan" if you rate an item highly (4 or more stars or 90 and above). "Fans" are listed by their Yahoo! ID and a link is provided to their music profile.
    • You may choose to make another user an influencer. That influencer will show up on your list of influencers and you will show on their list of followers. Similarly, other users can choose to make you an influencer. Yahoo! Music will recommend songs and albums that your influencers rate highly, and you will receive music on your LAUNCHcast Radio station that your Influencers like
    • Different sections of the Yahoo! web site and Music Engine, such as your music profile, enable other users to see your online status and send instant messages to you if you use Yahoo! Messenger. You can edit your preferences so that others do not see you online at any time.
  • Listening to Music and Watching Videos (Yahoo! Music Engine and LAUNCHcast)
    • By default, other users on your Yahoo! Messenger friends list may view and listen to the audio files in your collection when you use the Music Engine. You can turn this feature off in the Music Engine by choosing Edit > Preferences > Messenger Settings.
      • When you are listening to a friend's collection or they are listening to yours, the Music Engine will sometimes use a direct connection between your two computers to stream the file. In such instances, your IP address is available to that friend.
    • By default, your Messenger status message will be updated to show the song you are playing with the Music Engine or LAUNCHcast. The status message will change for the ID you are signed into Messenger with, even if you are not signed into the Music Engine, or if you are signed into the Music Engine and Messenger with different IDs.
      • You can turn this feature off in the Music Engine by choosing Edit > Preferences > Messenger Settings.
      • You can turn this feature off in Messenger by choosing Messenger > Preferences > Privacy.
      • You can turn this feature off in Messenger by choosing the status message selector and choosing a status message other than the song playing.
    • Your LAUNCHcast station is available to other members of the Yahoo! community through a link on your music profile. Others may still listen to your LAUNCHcast station if you hide your music profile.
    • For licensing reasons, we send designated third parties anonymous track information about the music you listen to through LAUNCHcast radio or Yahoo! Music Unlimited, or about videos that you watch. We may also send aggregated, non-identifiable information about our users' declared zip codes and gender to third parties.
  • If you purchased a premium Yahoo! Music Jukebox feature or service through a Yahoo! retail partner, Yahoo! may provide a confirmation of your purchase to that partner.
  • Yahoo! Music offers promotions that allow you to request information on a particular artist or sponsor. If you choose to receive information, your email address will be shared with the artist's representative or sponsor of the promotion. To learn how they use your information, please contact them directly. They are solely responsible for their use of this information.
  • Yahoo! Music works with different artists and bands to provide official artist fan clubs on Yahoo! Music. If you join a fan club, your information, including email address, may be shared with the artist or band consistent with the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for each artist club. In addition, please note that some artist clubs require that you receive email as part of the club.

Practices Regarding Your Ability to Update or Delete Information

  • Billing
    • To view, edit or cancel Yahoo! premium services you have ordered, including Yahoo! Music Unlimited, please visit: https://billing.yahoo.com. It includes information about services you currently subscribe to, payment scheduling and payment history.
  • Music Profile
    • You may choose to hide your music profile information from public view by clicking the 'hide profile' link at the top of your music profile.
      • Your music profile may still be found by other users; however it will only contain a link for them to listen to your LAUNCHcast radio station.
      • Your ratings, influencers and followers will no longer be shown. If someone listens to your LAUNCHcast station they will know you rated something but not the actual rating.
      • Hiding your music profile will also remove your Yahoo! ID from "fans of" and "similar members" lists.
    • You may edit your ratings in a few different ways: view your music profile and click the 'Edit' button next to 'My Ratings'; visit an artist, album or song page on the Yahoo! Music web site or Yahoo! Music Unlimited catalog; or listen to a song in LAUNCHcast or the Music Engine while online.
  • Community and Social Networking Features
    • At this time, the only way to not be an influencer is to hide your music profile.
      • Choosing to hide your profile will not remove you from other users' influencers or followers lists you may already be on, though it will stop additional users from adding you as an influencer.
    • To remove another user as an influencer visit your "My Influencers" list through your music profile and click the "Remove" button next to that user's Yahoo! ID.
  • You can choose whether or not to receive Yahoo! Music Backstage emails about music albums, artists, videos and more. If you choose to receive those emails, they will be sent to the email address that you specify. You may unsubscribe at any time.

What that means is that you can appear on someone else's contact list even if you haven't added them to your contact list.
    • Contact lists in earlier iterations of MyWeb were based off your Yahoo! 360 friends list. We have since separated your MyWeb contact list from your Yahoo! 360 contact list. • You do not need to use Yahoo! 360 to use MyWeb.

Yahoo! relies on external phone carriers for the accuracy of the caller ID information.
