| Data Storage |
|
Account Information
- When you register with Yahoo! or submit information to Yahoo!, a temporary copy of that information is routinely made to prevent accidental loss of your information through a computer malfunction or human error.
- Yahoo! keeps your account information active in our user registration databases in order to provide immediate access to your personalization preferences each time you visit Yahoo!.
- If you ask Yahoo! to delete your Yahoo! account, in most cases your account will be deactivated and then deleted from our user registration database in approximately 90 days. This delay is necessary to discourage users from engaging in fraudulent activity.
- Please note that any information that we have copied may remain in back-up storage for some period of time after your deletion request. This may be the case even though no information about your account remains in our active user databases.
Servers
- The Yahoo! computers (called "servers") that send your web pages and advertising banners process and store an enormous amount of information every day. These computer records are called "log files."
- Log files are used for analysis, research, auditing, and other purposes, as described above. After this information has been used, it is stored and is inaccessible. Until the information is stored, your Yahoo! ID may remain in our active server log files.
|
| Family Accounts |
Yahoo! Family Accounts allows a parent or legal guardian to give consent before their child creates an account with Yahoo!. A child is someone who indicates to us that they are under the age of 13.
Information Collection and Use Practices
- Before a parent can give consent for their child to register with Yahoo! through a Yahoo! Family Account, the parent must register and create their own Yahoo! account.
- In addition to information requested at registration, Yahoo! Family Accounts asks for the parent's name and credit card information. The credit card will not be charged; it is used for real-time verification purposes only.
- The credit card information is archived in a secure fashion as evidence that parental consent was received.

| Flickr |
| Flickr is a photo sharing community which provides you with an easy way to post and share photos online, and add meaningful metadata and comments to photos. You do not need to be registered to search or view public photos on Flickr, however you must be a registered member of Flickr or Yahoo! to post.
The Flickr Privacy Policy continues to be in effect for existing users of the Flickr service who have not yet merged their Flickr and Yahoo! accounts. For members who have merged their accounts or who signed up using a Yahoo! ID, this page describes current Yahoo! practices with respect to the Flickr products and services.
Information Collection and Use Practices
- You can choose to make your photos public for anyone to access, restrict access to a limited number of other Flickr users, or keep those photos private so only you can access them.
- Advertisements shown to you may be related to textual information, such as metadata and notes, associated with the photo you are seeing, or the search term you entered.
Information Sharing and Disclosure Practices
- You can specify whether or not you want your photos to be accessible to the public, accessible to a select few, or private (only you can access them with your Yahoo! ID and password).
- Billing for Flickr premium services, such as Flickr Pro, is done using PayPal, a third party.
- You do not need a PayPal account to pay when using your credit card. With either purchase method, your transaction and the personal information collected is subject to PayPal's terms and privacy policy. Yahoo! doesn't share your personal information with Paypal and Paypal doesn't share personal information they collect with Yahoo!.
- PayPal may continue to list the seller as Ludicorp Research and Development Ltd. which is now part of Yahoo!. Ludicorp had owned Flickr before.
Practices Regarding Your Ability to Update or Delete Information
- You can delete individual photos that you have on Flickr by selecting the photos that you wish to delete, then clicking the delete button. Or you can delete groups of photos using batch operations.
- Visit your Flickr account information area to edit your profile, default privacy settings for photos, and more.
- Communication with you

| IP Addresses |
|
When your web browser or email application requests a web page or email from another computer on the Internet, it automatically gives that computer the address where it should send the information. This is called your computer's "IP address." (IP stands for "Internet protocol.") For most users accessing the Internet from a dial-up Internet service provider (ISP), the IP address will be different every time you log on.
Information Collection and Use Practices
- Yahoo! receives IP addresses from all users because this information is automatically reported by your browser each time you view a web page.
- Your IP address is also stored in our user registration databases when you register with Yahoo!.
- IP addresses may be used for various purposes, including to:
- Diagnose service or technology problems reported by our users or engineers that are associated with the IP addresses controlled
by a specific web company or ISP.
- Send the most appropriate advertising based on geographic area or information derived from your IP address. Many IP addresses are commonly associated with Internet service providers, universities, or major corporations in specific regions or localities. Aggregate information derived from IP addresses may also be reported to advertisers.
- Estimate the total number of users visiting Yahoo! from specific countries or regions of the world.
- Assist merchants in Yahoo! Stores and Yahoo! Shopping to track visits to and business at their stores.
- Help determine which users have access privileges to certain content that we host.
Other
- When a Yahoo! web page is requested and viewed, that request is logged on our servers with information including the IP address of the computer that requested the page.
- Yahoo! Mail includes IP addresses in outgoing mail message headers, as specified by standard Internet protocol.
- Yahoo! Messenger sometimes uses a peer-to-peer connection during its operation, including times when you may be using it for instant messaging (text conversations), file sharing and webcam streaming. Peer-to-peer means that your computer connects directly to the other user's computer in the conversation without needing to go through Yahoo! servers. As such, your IP address is available to users you share a peer-to-peer connection with.
|
| Mobile Devices |
Yahoo! provides services which allow users to access and customize Internet content through mobile phones, PDAs, and other alternative devices. These devices may collect different information than what is collected by computers.
Mobile Device Unique Identifier
- When connecting to Yahoo! using a mobile device that provides Internet access, if the mobile device service provider uniquely identifies the device, Yahoo! will receive this information.
- Yahoo! may use this unique mobile device identification information to offer extended services and/or functionality.
- Certain Yahoo! services may require our collection of the phone number for your device. We may associate that phone number to the mobile device identification information; however we will not use that number for telemarketing.
Physical Location
- Some mobile phone service providers in the US are required to operate a system that will pinpoint the physical location of devices that use their service.
- Depending on the provider, Yahoo! may automatically receive this information.
- In the future, if Yahoo! begins to offer services that use pinpointing technology, we will ensure that we have your consent (an opt-in) before using the information.
- Yahoo! may use and store this information to provide enhanced location-based services as well as to serve location-targeted advertising.
- Yahoo! does not rent, sell or share personal information about you with other people or nonaffiliated companies except to provide products or services you've requested, when we have your permission, or under the following circumstances:
- We provide the information to trusted partners who work on behalf of or with Yahoo! under confidentiality agreements. These companies may use your personal information to help Yahoo! communicate with you about offers from Yahoo! and our marketing partners. However, these companies do not have any independent right to share this information.
- We have a parent's permission to share the information if the user is a child under the age of 13. Parents have the option of allowing Yahoo!'s collection and use of their child's information without consenting to Yahoo!'s sharing of this information with people and companies who may use this information for their own purposes;
- We respond to subpoenas, court orders or legal process, or to establish or exercise our legal rights or defend against legal claims;
- We believe it is necessary to share information in order to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activities, suspected fraud, emergency situations involving potential threats to the physical safety of any person, violations of Yahoo!'s terms of use, or as otherwise required by law.
- We transfer information about you if Yahoo! is acquired by or merged with another company. In this event, Yahoo! will notify you before information about you is transferred and subject to a different privacy policy.
Your Ability to Edit and Delete Your Account Information and Preferences
- While using mobile devices for connecting to Yahoo!, limitations of the service may prevent you from utilizing full functionality of Yahoo! services or tools. This includes the ability to edit or delete account information and content. You may need to use a computer to connect with Yahoo! in those cases.
- You can cancel all Yahoo! Alerts sent to your mobile device by visiting http://mobile.yahoo.com/sms/canceldevice1. Because many phone companies recycle phone numbers, it is possible for users who purchase a new phone to receive alerts that the previous owner had subscribed to. Since your phone has an email address that anyone can send a message to, Yahoo! can only stop alerts that it manages. Only your carrier can prevent all messages from being delivered to your device.

| Security at Yahoo! |
General
Yahoo! takes your security seriously and takes reasonable steps to protect your information. No data transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. The following is a summary of the measures Yahoo! takes to protect your information and descriptions of ways we implement these measures for different types of information you may provide to us. Please see our Security Center for additional information on how to reduce your security risk when online.
Yahoo! continues to evaluate and implement enhancements in security technology and practices, however we can only take steps to help reduce the risks of unauthorized access. Each individual using the Internet can take steps to help protect their information and further minimize the likelihood that a security incident may occur. We describe some of those measures and provide links to information that may be helpful in these pages and within our Security Center.
Security Steps We Have Taken
- Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
Yahoo! uses SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption when transmitting certain kinds of information, such as financial services information or payment information. An icon resembling a padlock is displayed on the bottom of most browsers window during SSL transactions that involve credit cards and other forms of payment.
Any time Yahoo! asks you for a credit card number on Yahoo! for payment or for verification purposes, it will be SSL encrypted. The information you provide will be stored securely on our servers. Once you choose to store or enter your credit card number on Yahoo!, it will not be displayed back to you in its entirety when you retrieve or edit it in the future. Instead of the entire number, you will only see asterisks and either the first four digits or the last four digits of your number.
- Security Key
The Yahoo! Security Key is an additional optional layer of security to control access to sensitive information or services on Yahoo!. Users of financial services such as Yahoo! Wallet, PayDirect, Yahoo! Bill Pay, and Money Manager are asked to create a security key during the sign-up process or when you purchase certain services that require a Yahoo! Wallet. Please note that the Security Key automatically "times out" after an hour and requires the user to sign in again to access Security Key protected areas.
- Secure Storage
Yahoo! maintains reasonable physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards that comply with federal regulations to protect personal information about you.
- Vendors and Partners
Yahoo! works with vendors and partners to protect the security and privacy of user information.
- Employee and Contractor Access to Information
Yahoo! limits access to personal information about you to those employees who we reasonably believe need to come into contact with that information to provide products or services to you or in order to do their jobs.
- Education and Training for Employees
Yahoo! has implemented a company-wide education and training program about security that is required of every Yahoo! employee.
Security Steps You Can Take
The following is information about topics that you may want to learn more about and steps you can take to help maintain your account and computer security when online.
Reporting incidents
- To Yahoo!
- If you believe your Yahoo! account has been compromised, please report the incident using our contact form.
- If you have been contacted by someone about your Yahoo! account asking for a password, birth date or other personal information, please forward the email to mail-spoof@cc.yahoo-inc.com. Please include the full headers and the HTML source code of the email you received.
- If you are a member of the security community and need to report a technical vulnerability, contact: security@yahoo-inc.com.
- To Law Enforcement
In the event that you believe that your personal safety is at risk or if you believe that you may be the victim of identity theft or other illegal conduct, please contact the appropriate federal, state or local law enforcement agencies directly.

| Third Party and Affiliate Cookies on Yahoo! |
Certain ad networks and Yahoo! affiliates use cookies on the Yahoo! network of web sites as described below.
Ad Networks
Most advertisements you see on the Yahoo! network of web sites are served to your web browser by Yahoo!. However, we also allow other companies, called ad networks, to serve advertisements within our web pages. Ad networks include third party ad servers, ad agencies, ad technology vendors and research firms.
Yahoo! may also include a file, called a web beacon, from these ad networks within pages served by Yahoo! so the networks may provide auditing, research and reporting for advertisers.
Because your web browser must request these advertisements and web beacons from the ad network's servers, these companies can view, edit or set their own cookies, just as if you had requested a web page from their site.
Yahoo "targets" some ads to users that may fit a certain profile – for example, men interested in financial services. Yahoo! does not provide any personal information to the advertiser when you interact with or view a targeted ad. However, when you view or interact with an ad the possibility exists that the advertiser will make the assumption that you meet the targeting criteria used to display the ad.
Yahoo! Affiliates
Yahoo! may allow certain Yahoo! affiliates to include web beacons within pages served by Yahoo!. These affiliates aggregate information about our advertising and provide auditing, research and reporting for our advertisers. Currently, Yahoo! allows web beacons from the following affiliate (click to visit their website):
None of the personal identifying information you have provided to Yahoo! is shared with our advertisers or our affiliates as part of this program.
Opting Out of Third Party Cookies
If you would like an ad network to not set or use cookies on your computer, you must visit each ad network's web site individually and opt out (if they offer this capability).
Currently, Yahoo! has relationships with the following ad networks (click to visit their site):

| Web Beacons |
Web pages may contain an electronic file called a web beacon, that allows a web site to count users who have visited that page or to access certain cookies. Yahoo! uses web beacons in the following ways:
Within the Yahoo! Network
- Yahoo! uses web beacons within the Yahoo! network of web sites in order to count users and to recognize users by accessing Yahoo! cookies.
- Being able to access Yahoo! cookies allows us to personalize your experience when you visit Yahoo! web sites that are located both on and off of the yahoo.com domain. For example, Yahoo! GeoCities pages are mostly located on the geocities.com domain.
Outside the Yahoo! Network
HTML Mail
- Yahoo!'s practice is to include web beacons in HTML-formatted email messages (messages that include graphics) that Yahoo!, or its agents, sends in order to determine which email messages were opened and to note whether a message was acted upon.
In general, any file served as part of a web page, including an ad banner, can act as a web beacon. Yahoo! may also include web beacons from other companies within pages served by Yahoo! so that Yahoo!'s advertisers may receive auditing, research and reporting.

| Yahoo! Alerts |
|
Yahoo! Alerts provides delivery of information on Yahoo! to your email box, Yahoo! Messenger, or mobile device. In order to use Yahoo! Alerts, you must be a registered Yahoo! user.
Information Collection and Use Practices
- Creating a Yahoo! Alert requires you to select an email address or mobile device where your alert will be delivered. Additional personal information may be required, depending on the type of alert you create.
Practices Regarding Your Ability to Update or Delete Information
- You can edit or delete your alerts at any time.
- You can cancel all Yahoo! Alerts sent to your mobile device by visiting http://mobile.yahoo.com/cancelalerts.
Web Beacons
- Yahoo! Alerts uses an invisible pixel, sometimes called a "web beacon," in HTML email messages to determine which email messages were opened and to note whether a message was acted upon.

| Yahoo! Auctions |
|
Yahoo! Auctions is an online auction service that provides a marketplace for buyers and sellers to find one another and conduct business. In order to bid on or sell merchandise using Yahoo! Auctions, you must be a registered Yahoo! user.
Information Collection and Use Practices
- The first time you place an item up for bid as a seller, or when you engage in multiple
auctions as a bidder, Yahoo! will ask you to verify your Yahoo! account with a credit
card. In addition to your credit card information, Yahoo! asks for your name, email
address, and zip code. You will not be charged a fee for this verification.
- All sellers are required to verify their credit card by signing up for a Yahoo! Wallet or for Yahoo! PayDirect. Yahoo! uses this information to help prevent misuse of Yahoo! Auctions.
- The credit card stored in your Yahoo! Wallet is used to bill you on a monthly basis for any applicable listing fees, and we reserve the right to bill your credit card when your account total reaches $100.
- When you bid on an item on Yahoo! Auctions, you must enter the amount of your bid and
your password. This bid will be publicly available in the auction bid history along with your Yahoo! ID or alias that you are bidding under.
- In the Question & Answer section of each auction, bidders can submit questions for the seller. These questions, the answers, and your Yahoo! ID or alias will be visible to the public.
- When an auction has successfully closed, buyers and sellers are invited to rate one another. All ratings for a buyer or seller are publicly displayed under the "Ratings" tab of a user's Auction Profile. Both parties (the party that was rated as well as the party that did the rating) are identified with their Yahoo! IDs and with a link to the auction that they transacted within the rating itself.
- If you file a claim, we ask you to fill out a complaint form that asks for information including your name, address, and email address. We use this information to send you and the seller involved in the claim an email encouraging each party to resolve the dispute. The email will contain a link to the complaint that you file. We populate the seller's Yahoo! ID and email address into the complaint form and the seller is responsible for forwarding this information to cynoSure Financial Inc. We also store this information for you so that you may access your claim and send it to cynoSure Financial Inc. in the event that you escalate your claim.
- The Neighborhood Watch feature allows users to voice opinions about auctions that do not belong on our auction site. We use this information to decide which auctions should be removed. When you submit a Neighborhood Watch report, we ask for your Yahoo! ID. This information is not visible to the public.
- When you create an Auctions Alert, Yahoo! asks you to define what you wish to be alerted
about (bids, new auctions in certain categories, etc.) and asks for an email address where your alert should be sent. You can modify or delete alerts at any time from the alerts section of Yahoo! Auctions or from Yahoo! Alerts.
- When you use the "Email to a Friend" link, Yahoo! will prefill a form with the name
and email address we have for you in our records. You enter the email address for the
person you want to receive the notice. Yahoo! will use that email address to transmit your message and not for any marketing purpose.
- When you submit a testimonial about your experience on Yahoo! Auctions, we will ask for your name, email address, Yahoo! ID, and information about your experience. If you indicate that we may quote you, your name and experience may be shared with others, and you may be contacted about your experience.
Information Sharing and Disclosure Practices
- When an auction has been completed, Yahoo! will transmit the contact information of the winning bidder to the seller and vice versa so that the parties can complete the transaction.
- If you are involved in a claim, Yahoo! may share certain personal information and transactional information with cynoSure Financial Inc. in order to help facilitate the investigation and resolution of the claim. cynoSure Financial Inc. may only use this information to process claims and may not use this information for any other purpose.

Web Services enable application developers and researchers to integrate Yahoo!'s internet content and services with their content and applications. You need to have an Application ID in order to use the Yahoo! Web Services.
Information Collection and Use Practices
- Before accessing the Yahoo! Web Services, you will need to get an Application ID. Information collected on the Application ID page may be used by Yahoo! to contact you if there is a problem with your application. You will be asked to provide a Yahoo! ID and an optional alternate email address for contacting you.
- Access to the Web Services is rate-limited based upon the user's IP address. Yahoo! logs IP addresses for each Web Service during a 24-hour period on a per-IP basis in order to determine the number of API calls made by an IP address during a specific window of time.
- If you wish, you may download a free Software Developer's Kit containing libraries and examples in various languages to help you get started on your applications. Yahoo! logs the number of downloads made from the site.
Information Sharing and Disclosure Practices
- Whenever you use a Yahoo! Web Service, you are required to provide your Application ID as a parameter to the Web Service request. The Application ID is used to identify each application.
- In the future, information about your application's popularity may be made available to you through the Yahoo! ID associated with the Application ID.
